News: Steel Chronicle Location Test

In October of last year Konami trademarked Steel Chronicle and we now know what that was for. In short, it appears to be a multiplayer focused mecha arcade game that cashes in on the recent runaway success of Border Break (right down to the character customisation). Except the primary antagonists are giant bugs rather than mecha (basically a bit like the Akrid in the Lost Planet series of games). The game recently underwent a location test at two arcades, one in Akihabara and another in Ikebukuro. No word on whether it’s any good but the general vibe from Japanese gamers is that the blatant Border Break “homage” is a bit lazy.

Can’t say I don’t enjoy the character design and mechs (less, but still).

Too bad it’s arcade only.

Agreed! I wish they’d put these out on XBLA or PSN, I’d pay $15 to $20 for some good squad mech action!

These look like the full 60 bucks import kinda deals.
I can live with that for some solid mech action with my bros.

Yeah, $20. Come on. That’s why they won’t even bother. A PSN release at $20 would bring in about as much as Border Break does in one arcade in one day.

So if you’re fighting bugs is it a co-op thing?

Well if it’s like Border Break it is yes. Though Border Break’s more like a Mechanized version of CoD. You are fighting squads with differently balanced mechanized troops.

Why do the mech designs remind me of Gundam Senki so much (think 7th Gundam and ST/LA Gundams)

I am with you on the heavy Gundam vibe. Though I am not a particular fan of Gundam I like the look. Border Break is a bit more distinct in it’s mech designs.

Also True I’d probably pay $60 for these, my XBLA/PSN pricing had more to do with these being quarter suckers in Japan, not retail games.

It’s nice. If they can’t bring over the games, I hope they do make some nicely detailed and highly poseable toys or plamo. And hopefully they will give them fully flexing phalanges (toes).
