News: From Software developing Gundam Unicorn game

It’s been reported that From Software are around 70% through production on a PS3 exclusive Gundam Unicorn game. Set for release sometime in spring next year, the game apparently has supremely detailed mobile suit models (to the extent that the Sunrise representatives were apparently blinded by their sheer majesty) as well as a large emphasis on using the voice talent from the series with each of the main characters receiving their own chapter. In addition the game will only cover the first three episodes of the animated series, which begs the question as to whether there will be enough content. In terms of actual gameplay there are references to ACE but not which ones specifically, as the newer PS3 entry really wasn’t that great. To be honest, we’re on the fence with this one. As From Software’s ACE series has taken a bit of a functional nosedive and, despite the supposed aesthetic wonders present here, if it plays like manky balls we’ll have yet another Gundam game that will prop up the false meme that they’re all crap.

I actually hope it does turn out to be crap. Being shitty seems to exponentially increase the chances we’ll get the game overseas. If it was good, though? Might as well stamp IMPORT ONLY on every copy.

well palyed.

Based only on the first 3 episodes? LOL so this is going to be a glorified demo? ok then.

Something tells me this will also end up on the PSPvita and it will be better on that.

I guess its just better to wait and see, cant be worse than most of the other crap Gundam games.

this could go either way. ATM though not too encouraging.

I don’t really see the point in involving From in this. These days Bandai/Banpresto/whatever is one of my favorite publishers. They have put out a truckload of very entertaining stuff in the past 5 years or so. They need From like they need a hole in the head.

Frankly, I never understood the appeal of From Software. There games are extremely slow and clunky and soulless. Like mid 80s Amiga Battletech garbage. Gundam is supposed to be lightning quick and extremely hot blooded, ie: Virtual On. Night and day, IMO.

Hate to say, but the only thing that Bandai has “directly” done was either based on SRW or Gundam vs engine which was done by Capcom.

I do actually have to ask if you have played ACE 2 or 3. I respect that you might have that opinion of Armored Core or even Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls, but I don’t think it’s reasonable to call ACE 2 or 3 slow.

On a seperate note, remember that ACE R was partially the result of executive meddling on the part of Banpresto, so I’m holding out on more information behind the staff responsible for the game before I judge the potential it has. I am disappointed that they decided to do this based on the first 3 episodes, as this will severely limit the potential game length.

I really don’t care where the games come from, I just care they thee is a lot of very fun stuff with “Bandai” written on it. My point is that involving From because they are a “mecha game maker” doesn’t help their already very good image, it actually hurts it, for me.

I honestly consider Extreme Versus to be a pretty superficial series, gameplay-wise, but its still much more fun than AC. Recently Bandai has given us those killer Macross games, two separate but great Gundam series, the best SRW games ever (series selection side), as well as great games based on stuff I’m not actually interested like One Piece and the amazing Kamen Rider Legends.

Honestly I’d have to say that Bandai is probably my favorite publisher these days. They’ve come a LONG way since the early 90s when they produced almost nothing but pure garbage.

BTW, no, I haven’t played any ACE games. After a half dozen or so clunky boring games where the mecha all looked like tarnished dumpster gestalts I gave up on them. Seriously, please don’t “weather” space mecha. It just makes them look terrible.

Why would they limit it to 3 episodes if the fourth one will be released before this game even hits stores?

Most likely because it’s been in development for a while and when it started only the first three scripts had been done.

Because there are going to be six total, and meaning that if they used four for the first game the second game would be *really* thin based on just two episodes.

I like Gundam Unicorn, but its hard to imagine getting a solid mision based game out of it, even if you used the entire series, without manufacturing a LOT of filler. Its not exactly action packed or long.

But knowing Bandai there’ll at least be three games: One for the first half, one for the second then one for all episodes.

WHY NOBODY EVER SAYS NOTHING ABOUT GUNDAM VS? THEY ARE THE F****** BEST GUNDAM GAMES!

PS3 preview

If you bothered to check the site, you’d have seen that we’ve covered the Gundam Versus games a fair bit. Nor do we assume that ALL Gundam games are crap, as many aren’t:

I want to know why they’ve made dozens of titles using the VS engine, but have yet to applied to a strategy title like the old original iteration of SD Gundam.

Action-strategy is one of my favorite genres thanks to Winner’s History on the Gamegear. A strategy-RPG like the Generation series (or the lovely Gather Beat games on the Wonderswan) crossed with action battles from a VS games would be proper brilliant.

While having the game based on the three episodes I’ve watched is nice I would have preferred a side story using grunt units like the GM III or the Gera Zulu starting from just after CCA.
