News: Gundam 30th Anniversary Games Released

We mentioned not that long ago about a new line of commemorative gaming releases for Gundam’s 30th Anniversary. Well, they’re now out with places like Play Asia stocking a fair few. Our personal recommendations would be Gundam MS Sensen 0079 an FPS on the Wii, pictured above, and Gundam Battle Universe a third person shooter on the PSP. Neither of these games will probably see a Western release so you’d best acquire them now whilst they’re available at their new reduced price point. We will be reviewing both games in the new future though, so also keep an eye out for that.

News: Gundam Unicorn to be released via the PlayStation Store

The anime adaptation of Harutoshi Fukui’s Gundam Unicorn novels will be premièred in Japan as a download via the PlayStation Store. Much like the recent anime Xam’d that saw its release via the same service, Gundam Unicorn will have its first (of six) episodes available on February 20th. There will also be HD and SD versions available, costing 1000 to 700 yen respectively (so you can also watch it on your PSP). This release is notable as it pre-dates the disc versions by almost a month and considering how hotly anticipated this new Gundam series is, this should further cement the PlayStation 3’s and Sony’s standing in the (frankly massive) Japanese anime market. The Unicorn Gundam is also a playable unit in the just released Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus.

After the announcement of the upcoming Transformers game, Activision have followed it up with a debut trailer that doesn’t really show very much to be honest. In addition, it’s pretty obvious that it doesn’t feature gameplay footage either. Still, for those curious about the designs it does show more in terms of the stylistic approach. Narratively, it looks as though the game is set before the Transformers arrival on Earth. This would explain their more angular and generally futuristic aesthetic. Along with the trailer, there is now an official site for the game.

News: Transformers The War for Cybertron Announced

In the latest issue of Game Informer, a new Transformers game has been announced. Called “The War For Cybertron” it’s being developed by High Moon Studios and appears to follow its own continuity, with new designs to follow suit (though these look moderately decent compared to the recent film monstrosities). The game will apparently be moderately standard third-person shooter fare and be available on both the PS3 and 360 (though it may receive other ports too, knowing Activision). We’ve talked about various Tranformers games before, so hiring a developer with no prior mecha game experience AND then treating said mecha as functionally comparable to human protagonists is never a good idea.

To commemorate Gundam’s 30th Anniversary, Bandai Namco are re-releasing a selection of best selling Gundam games at a reduced price in Japan. Some of these games are still Japanese exclusives, which is a shame as the recent Wii game developed by Team White Dingo was superb and it never made the jump abroad. Likewise, Artdink’s excellent PSP games are still without a Western release. These anniversary versions will hit Japanese stores on the 17th December.

Square Enix have been fairly diligent recently at posting new gameplay videos on their YouTube channel for the upcoming Double Helix developed Front Mission Evolved. Much in the same way our hands-on impressions indicated that the TGS demo was functionally rather lacklustre, these videos only seem to confirm that appraisal further.

On November 19th a patch for Gundam Senki 0081 will be released. This patch adds functionality to the core game as well as various minor bug fixes. The most notable of these are a selection of new custom parts and missions (the latter introducing elements from Zeta Gundam). The Acguy is also getting toned down in terms of its stealth capability and online game timing options have been updated. Overall, it’s a pretty thorough package and makes an already solid game offer just that bit more.

Toys: Metal Gear Rex

A lesser known Hong Kong toy manufacturer by the name of threeA are releasing a Metal Gear Rex toy as penned by the suitably under appreciated Yoji Shinkawa. Rex was the climactic Metal Gear in Metal Gear Solid, though it also made a functional cameo in the recent Metal Gear Solid 4. threeA don’t normally handle licensed mecha designs, instead creating their own, so this choice on the part of Konami and Hideo Kojima is an interesting one. Early photos have leaked online and the detailing does look mightily impressive but this looks more like a collector’s statuette than toy. In any case, no word on price or release date has been announced as yet.

Kits: Unsung kit preview

Over at GA Graphic there’s a nice preview of the upcoming 1/72 scale Unsung kit from Armored Core For Answer. Whilst based on the same frame as the Aaliyah the design is different in several respects, notably that of the legs and weapon load out. The observant will note that the Aaliyah kit is actually representative of the Supplice design from Armored Core 4 and was used extensively to promote the game in Japan (so much so that it’s emblazoned on the box art). The Unsung kit will be available in December for 5,200 yen, you can get it here.
