Toys: Robot Damashii Billbine

What with the current Tamashii Nation show in full swing, a slew of new toys have been displayed by Bandai. The Robot Damashii line has really entered my personal good books, from a rather lovely RX-93 Nu Gundam from Char’s Counterattack to a simply exquisite Billbine from Aura Battler Dunbine. Both are seminal Yutaka Izubuchi designs, but the mecha in Dunbine are probably some of our favourite designs ever. Thoroughly revolutionary, they kicked conventional wisdom on mecha aesthetic sharply in the head. There have been a number of Billbine toys over the years but the sculpt on this Robot Damashii iteration is really quite bloody amazing. Gaming wise the Billbine has been in all manner of Super Robot Wars entries and all the (good) Another Century’s Episode games. There’s no word whether this new figure will transform though, as it does in the series, and the release date and price are still unknown too.

I can tell this won’t transform by the joints and having seen many a henkei toy in my day.

Yeah, I thought the same too (as there are no transforming Robot Damashii toys as yet) but until I know for certain I held off saying that. Plus, Billbine’s transformation is really simple and the previous ABIA figure did it just fine.

But there’s the Nirvash Type Zero Spec 2 and L-Gaim Mk II as far as transforming Damashiis go. Granted they both use some parts swapping for what should be simple transformations so who knows. Bandai forgot how to make a proper Tallgeese neck so I don’t have my hopes set too high.

Ah, yeah forgot about those as they’re part swaps (despite owning both of them weirdly). Though I tend to ignore part swaps as proper transforming toys. This sculpt on the Billbine does look awesome though.

I hope Bandai will follow up on Billbine and release the Sirbine eventually.

man on another note, what was up with the weird last minute color swap for the billbine in the tv show? It was pretty ugly looking and uncalled for. The red one is much more iconic.

There was a reason in the show, but it escapes me at the moment. The original colour scheme is indeed a lot nicer though.

I believe that the reason was to give the Billbine (or Billvine!) a “military look” by changing its colors from the original to a darker scheme that dropped the red and yellow.

Granted, it’s been some time since I’ve watched DUNBINE, so….
