<p>The current Wonder Festival coverage has recently surfaced and there is a veritable panoply of mecha gaming related kits that have been displayed. From the the wonderful Kotobukiya stall showing the first <span style="color: #991122;"><a href="http://ga.sbcr.jp/mreport/017665/images/06.jpg">Nineball</a></span> from the original <a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/features/features-armored-hardcore/">Armored Core</a> games as well as the <span style="color: #991122;"><a href="http://ga.sbcr.jp/mreport/017665/images/08.jpg">Sobrero</a></span> from <a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/reviews/reviews-armored-core-for-answer/">Armored Core For Answer</a>. In addition, their <span style="color: #991122;"><a href="http://ga.sbcr.jp/mreport/017664/images/12.jpg">Jehuty</a></span> kit also finally reared its head too. However, the most impressive kits shown are from PLUM&#8217;s stall with the suspected <span style="color: #991122;"><a href="http://ga.sbcr.jp/mreport/017678/images/01.jpg">Valken</a></span> kit shown as well as an amazingly intricate <span style="color: #991122;"><a href="http://ga.sbcr.jp/mreport/017678/images/03.jpg">Cloudbreaker 01</a></span> from Murakumo, the latter was originally shown at this year&#8217;s <a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/news/news-murakumo-at-wonder-festival/">Winter event</a>.</p>

Tsuchida is effectively the founding father for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_Mission">Front Mission</a> series. There have been rumours that Tsuchida was quite ill during the development of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_XIII">Final Fantasy XIII</a>, so this departure may be in part due to that. In any case, we dutifully doff our cap to a man that has helped shaped mecha gaming to what it is today and wish him well. Thanks to Chazumaru for the heads up.</p>

<p>Courtesy of our good friends at <a href="http://www.hlj.com/">HobbyLink Japan</a>, we&#8217;ve been sent the <span style="color: #991122;"><a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN963183">Robot Damashii L-Gaim Mk. 2</a></span> toy from <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=878">Heavy Metal L-Gaim</a>. To help give the toy some context we&#8217;ve also included some videos of it from the original anime and a few games it has been featured in over the years at the end of the review.</p>
<p><span id="more-5392"></span></p>
<p>The early to mid 80&#8242;s were really a halcyon age for real robot anime, from the likes of <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=1188">Dunbine</a> and <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=94">VOTOMS</a> to classics such as <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=878">Heavy Metal L-Gaim</a>. Written by <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=100">Yoshiyuki Tomino</a>, the series featured the unique (and then new) talents of one <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=2436">Mamoru Nagano</a>. Set in the distant Pentagona star system, it told the plight of the young Daba Myroad trying to usurp the evil and equally mysterious Olda Poseidal. What was especially interesting about the mecha, called heavy metals, was that they were very much industrial machines with armor hinged upon an internal endoskeleton. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.mahq.net/mecha/l-gaim/l-gaim/l-gaim-mk2.htm">L-Gaim Mk. 2</a> was the mid-season upgrade to the first <a href="http://www.mahq.net/mecha/l-gaim/l-gaim/l-gaim.htm">L-Gaim</a> for Daba Myroad, which was based upon the prior <a href="http://www.mahq.net/mecha/l-gaim/l-gaim/stack.htm">Amon Duule &#8220;Stack&#8221;</a>, and as with most mid-season upgrades in real robot anime shows this one also transformed (into &#8220;prowler&#8221; mode no less). It was also one of the most powerful heavy metals in existence at that point in the show as well, as it could wield the beefy buster launcher and use it with impunity as its generator capacity was more than enough to handle the power output (something that normally plagued other heavy metals). The only other heavy metal that was even a match for the Mk. 2 was the ancient <a href="http://www.mahq.net/mecha/l-gaim/l-gaim/originalauge.htm">Original Auge</a>, piloted by Poseidal himself.</p>
<p>Coupled with Nagano&#8217;s sleek and almost ethereal aesthetic L-Gaim resulted in some of the most striking mecha designs in anime and ones that have been hugely influential ever since. Following L-Gaim, Nagano also went onto pen the truly epic <a href="http://www.gearsonline.net/fss/">Five Star Stories</a> manga, with many of the heavy metals being re-birthed as beautifully ornate <a href="http://www.gearsonline.net/fss/mh/">mortar headds</a>.</p>
<p>In terms of gaming, the Mk. 2 has been quite prolific to the point of it being featured in the recently released <a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/reviews/reviews-another-centurys-episode-portable-710/">Another Century&#8217;s Episode Portable</a>, with it&#8217;s buster launcher still packing an epic punch. It&#8217;s also been a moderate regular in the Super Robot Wars games, with the latest being <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars_GC">XO</a>.</p>
<p>Despite the show&#8217;s popularity and the large number of toys for the L-Gaim Mk. 1, the Mk. 2 hasn&#8217;t been as lucky. Apart from the rather lacklustre <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN43435">HCM toy</a>, the Mk. 2 has been somewhat neglected over the years. However, Bandai recently held a poll at one of their Tamashii Nations events and the <a href="http://ngeekhiong.blogspot.com/2010/02/tamashii-feature-vol-1-desired_19.html">overwhelming response by fans</a> was for an all new L-Gaim Mk. 2 toy.</p>
<p>Bandai have dutifully complied and done so brilliantly. As with their other Robot Damashii line, the Mk. 2 has very solid articulation as well as a very accurate sculpt. For the price, it does feel very sophisticated in terms of the engineering at work here. The transformation is also very interesting as it has been very accurately re-created, something that takes a little getting used to because the mode shifts look simple but there&#8217;s actually more going on than first meets the eye.</p>
<p><strong>Toy:</strong> <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN963183">Robot Damashii L-Gaim Mk. 2</a><br />
<strong>Price:</strong> 4,640 yen<br />

<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_10.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_10-480x650.jpg" alt="" title="lgaim_mk2_10" width="480" height="650" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5387" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_11.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_11-480x871.jpg" alt="" title="lgaim_mk2_11" width="480" height="871" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5388" /></a></p>
<p>The transformation into &#8220;prowler&#8221; mode is actually quite complex and does, unfortunately, require some parts swapping. The latter becomes apparent when it seems that Bandai have literally gone to town on trying to accurately re-create the transformed aesthetic from the show. The legs have additional hinges above the knee that then click into place at the back of the thighs. The hips also slide back to make room for it to kneel into position. The final result, whilst simple to look at, is quite striking and it&#8217;s clear the emphasis was on visual accuracy throughout. Naturally, in order to display this mode off to its fullest requires one of the Tamashii Stands (sold separately). </p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_12.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_12-480x189.jpg" alt="" title="lgaim_mk2_12" width="480" height="189" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5389" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_13.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_13-480x432.jpg" alt="" title="lgaim_mk2_13" width="480" height="432" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5390" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_14.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/lgaim_mk2_14-480x207.jpg" alt="" title="lgaim_mk2_14" width="480" height="207" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5391" /></a></p>
<p>As with all Robot Damashii toys, Bandai have done a really nice job on the Mk. 2. Whilst the transformation is a bit fiddly, the toy is very poseable and accurate to the show. Even all the power lines and piping are in full effect too, something that&#8217;s surprising for a toy this cheap. </p>
<p>Overall this is very much a labour of love by the team at Bandai and, most importantly, a figure done for the fans of the show. It also gives us leave to blithely sing &#8220;Say Mk. 2&#8243; an awful lot, which is always nice.</p>

<p>Along with a slew of other toy announcements today, Bandai have finally come clean on the fact they are indeed going to release Robot Damashii toys of both the <a href="http://tamashii.jp/item/item.php?eid=01429&#038;hatsubai5=2011&#038;hatsubai3=02">L-Gaim Mk.I</a> and <a href="http://tamashii.jp/item/item.php?eid=01418&#038;hatsubai5=2011&#038;hatsubai3=01">Mk.II</a> respectively. If you remember the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-gaim">Heavy Metal L-Gaim</a> mecha, designed by the glam-rock-tastic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mamoru_Nagano">Mamoru Nagano</a>, topped the wishlist of fans for new Robot Damashii figures <a href="http://ngeekhiong.blogspot.com/2010/02/tamashii-feature-vol-1-desired_19.html">not that long ago</a>.</p>
<p>Unsurprisingly, with such a classic <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiyuki_Tomino">Yoshiyuki Tomino</a> real robot series it&#8217;s been featured in numerous games over the years. From a variety of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Robot_Wars">Super Robot Wars</a> titles to the more recent first two <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_Century%27s_Episode">Another Century&#8217;s Episode</a> games (not to mention <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvN09vUYgIA#t=1m10s">Real Robots Final Attack</a>, but we prefer to ignore that little &#8220;gem&#8221; if we can).</p>
<p>L-Gaim has also had quite an impressive toy history too, from lovely <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN43435">HCM figures</a> to a very recent and utterly amazing <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN951637">Soul of Chogokin Spec</a> toy. These new Robot Damashii figures will hopefully be a bit more affordable though. Currently there&#8217;s no word on whether the L-Gaim Mk.II toy will retain the transformation but it&#8217;s quite a simple sequence so it&#8217;s quite likely it will. Both toys will be release early next year in Japan and can be pre-ordered <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN963290">here</a> and <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN963183">here</a>. What with us being massive L-Gaim nerds, we&#8217;ve also linked the lovely openings from the series as well as a few game clips of the respective mecha in action below.</p>

<p>Over at Comiket, Takara Tomy have unveiled the next set of Video Game Robotics gashapon that were meant for a June release (that are now scheduled for December instead). In total, the series will contain four mecha from four different games. They are the <a href="http://www2.moeyo.com/img/10/08/14/5/548.html">PDF-802 X-4+</a> from <a href="https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Power_Dolls">Power Dolls 2</a>, a PC turnbased strategy game with mecha designed by none other than <a href="https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Hajime_Katoki">Hajime Katoki</a>. Followed by the <a href="http://www2.moeyo.com/img/10/08/14/5/549.html">HIGH-MACS 12</a> from the original <a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/features/features-gungriffon-the-forgotten-conflict/">Gungriffon</a> and then the <a href="http://www2.moeyo.com/img/10/08/14/5/550.html">V-MH GLORY</a> from the super rare <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Slader_Glory">Metal Slader Glory</a> adventure game on the Famicom (later ported to the Super Famicom). The last mecha, of the four, is <a href="http://figure.deca.jp/blog/diary.cgi?no=208">apparently a new blast runner</a> from the upcoming <a href="http://borderbreak.com/">Border Break Air Burst</a>. However, all this may sound and look wonderful but the last set of gashapon in the range were pretty awful and they cost 700 yen a piece, these new toys cost 400 yen each. Considering the poor quality of the previous set, reducing the price for the new one doesn&#8217;t exactly bode well really.</p>

<p>Courtesy of our good friends at <a href="http://www.hlj.com/">HobbyLink Japan</a>, we&#8217;ve been sent a toy from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Suit_Victory_Gundam">Victory Gundam</a> to review. Specifically, the Robot Damashii <a href="http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN960344">V2 Assault Buster Gundam</a>. In addition, to give the toy some context, we&#8217;ve also linked some anime and gameplay footage of it in action in <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-8t9-71-9f-84-j-70-3kmq.html">Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus</a> at the end of the review.</p>
<p><span id="more-2613"></span></p>
<p>The base <a href="http://mahq.net/mecha/gundam/v/lm314v21.htm">V2 Gundam</a> is the obligatory unit upgrade the main protagonist, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uso_Evin">Usso Evin</a>, receives midway through the series. Like all the other mecha in the show, it was penned by then relative newcomer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katoki_Hajime">Katoki Hajime</a>. It was also a sleeker departure from his earlier and grittier work on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_Sentinel">Gundam Sentinel</a>. After all, Victory Gundam was in many ways a swansong for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Century">Universal Century</a> timeline &#8211; so the streamlined design was done to imply the technological advances since the events in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_F-91">Gundam F-91</a>, thirty years earlier.</p>
<p>Victory Gundam is a brutal yet poignant series however and very much in the mould of Tomino&#8217;s &#8220;Kill &#8216;em all&#8221; style. What&#8217;s surprising, despite the young age of many of the main characters (which actually drew parallels with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vifam">Ginga Hyoryu Vifam</a> in many ways), was that much of the characterisation was very subtle for a Gundam show. Now, Gundam is by no means overt to begin with but Victory was even more pensive than usual for the saga.</p>
<p>Despite being a widely loved show, Victory Gundam hasn&#8217;t actually been featured in that many games over the years. It barely had <a href="http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/snes/data/565618.html">even one</a> Super Famicom tie-in (which was <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSpSTa6kEgo">pretty awful</a> too), let alone any kind of real featuring in Super Robot Wars. Even the relatively recent <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-8t9-71-44-49-en-15-gundam+climax-84-j-70-156q.html">Gundam Climax UC</a> and the various Artdink Gundam Battle games have omitted Victory (bar the recently released <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-8t9-71-9f-84-j-70-3p12.html">Assault Survive</a> obviously).</p>
<p>It was only until Capcom featured Victory in their Gundam Versus games that the series has seen more gaming representation. With <a href="http://www.play-asia.com/SOap-23-83-8t9-71-9f-84-j-70-3kmq.html">Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus</a> being the most recent to feature the V2 Gundam and its Assault Buster upgrade.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://mahq.net/mecha/gundam/v/lm314v23-24.htm">Assault Buster</a> is effectively the ultimate incarnation of the V2 Gundam. Comprised of both the <a href="http://mahq.net/mecha/gundam/v/lm314v24.htm">Assault</a> and <a href="http://mahq.net/mecha/gundam/v/lm314v23.htm">Buster</a> packs, it&#8217;s a truly formidable mobile suit in the series. It&#8217;s also one of our personal favourite Gundam designs of all time, so bear that in mind when you read the rest of this review. </p>

<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a8.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a8-480x328.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a8" width="480" height="328" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2602" /></a></p>
<p>Like almost all the other toys in the Robot Damashii line, the Assault Buster is incredibly well articulated and the sculpt (for the size) is remarkably accurate. What&#8217;s slightly different about this entry is that you&#8217;re not just buying one toy, but actually four. This means that you&#8217;re given all the parts to assemble the Assault version of the V2 Gundam (see below).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a9.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a9-480x321.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a9" width="480" height="321" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2616" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a10.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a10-480x363.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a10" width="480" height="363" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2611" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a11.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a11-480x313.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a11" width="480" height="313" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2608" /></a></p>
<p>As well as the Buster variant (seen below).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a12.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a12-480x457.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a12" width="480" height="457" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2612" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a13.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a13-480x635.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a13" width="480" height="635" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2609" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a14.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a14-480x515.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a14" width="480" height="515" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2607" /></a></p>
<p>If that wasn&#8217;t enough you also get to have the original V2 Gundam, along with its signature &#8220;wings of light&#8221; spawned from its Minovsky drive at the rear.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a15.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a15-480x515.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a15" width="480" height="515" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2621" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a16.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a16-480x736.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a16" width="480" height="736" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2615" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a17.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a17-480x465.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a17" width="480" height="465" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2604" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a18.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a18-480x540.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a18" width="480" height="540" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2617" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a19.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a19-480x386.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a19" width="480" height="386" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2601" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a20.jpg"><img src="http://www.mechadamashii.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/v2_gundam_a20-479x353.jpg" alt="" title="v2_gundam_a20" width="479" height="353" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2618" /></a></p>
<p>For the money, this has to be the best Robot Damashii toy by quite a margin. Especially if you have any fondness for the series that birthed it, the sheer amount of options for one toy is impressive. It&#8217;s also a toy that&#8217;s meant to be played with. Despite all the quite delicate elements of the designs, the manufacture is very sturdy and assembling the different versions isn&#8217;t an ordeal (compared to something the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_FIX_Figuration">Gundam FIX Figuration</a> range, where you&#8217;re often terrified of inadvertently breaking parts during their assembly).</p>
<p>Compared to the other toys in the Robot Damashii line, with the <a href="http://www.mahq.net/Mecha/gundam/00/gn-0000+gnr-010.htm">00 Raiser</a> pictured above for comparison, the Assault Buster (fully assembled) is really quite beefy.</p>
<p>Finally, it&#8217;s worth clarifying to gaming throng here that whilst I&#8217;m mentioning &#8220;assembly&#8221; this is by no means a kit in any way. The respective parts available are there to build the different variants of the V2 Gundam and it&#8217;s all very straightforward indeed.</p>
<p>As such, we can thoroughly recommend this toy to anyone that likes uber Gundam designs and/or has a penchant for Katoki&#8217;s aesthetic leanings.</p>

<p>You may remember a while back that we posted about a collection of <a href="http://www.mechadamashii.com/toyskits/toys-video-game-robotics/">classic mecha gaming gashapon</a> released by Takara Tomy. Truth be told, most of the figures in the set were pretty woeful but a few weren&#8217;t. Notably, that of the assaults suits from both <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Target_Earth_%28video_game%29">Leynos</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_Suits_Valken">Valken</a>. It seems that the Japanese online shop, AmiAmi, is releasing a <a href="http://www.amiami.com/shop/?set=english&#038;vgForm=ProductInfo&#038;sku=TOY-RBT-1035&#038;template=default/product/e_display.html">custom desert camouflage Valken figure</a> from the same line. In addition to sporting a new colour scheme the toy also has the booster pack attached to its rear. This was seen in the second mission of Assaults Suits Valken (or Cybernator as it was released in the West). The figure will be released in March 2010 for 1000 yen, though you can pre-order it now from AmiAmi. Many thanks to Matthew Hawkins (aka <a href="http://www.fort90.com/">Fort90</a>) for pointing this out.</p>
